A look into the life of a Transgender eleven year old

I would like to share this story of this beautiful little girl named Jazz. She is an energetic, sweet, caring, strong and absolutely adorable little girl. She is also transgender. I think her story is amazing and her strength to take on adversity is so incredibly inspiring. Her story shows how having a supportive family can truly change the outcome of LGBT youth self-esteem. Jazz is an amazing example of a happy young member of the LGBT community, even though she faces discrimination, she fights for her rights and continues to make strides for the LGBT community as a whole. Take a look at this video and her amazing story.

Working through the Research/Writing Process

2011 Photo Shoot 4

So far in my writing process I have really started to realize the extent of research there is on this particular issue. It seems that more attention has been brought to this issue in recent years and professionals are interested in identifying the causes and possible solutions to create a safer social environment for the youth of the LGBT community. I have come to find out that there are significant limitations to my research, including that often times it is difficult to identify the true number of suicide due to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. It is hypothesized that a lot of young people do not “come out” about their identity due to fear of rejection, and in some cases the cause of suicide may be recorded as depression but the reason for the depression may have been the underlying sexuality of the individual. In order to prevent this from happening we need to create a safer environment for these youth to talk openly about their sexuality, and allow them to work through their feelings instead of bottling it all up in isolation. Throughout my research thus far I have found that the creation and implementation of support groups, such as gay-straight alliance(GSA), for LGBT youth within their social environment have proven to be helpful in creating support and reassurance for these individuals.
